  • Diagnosis and Prevention of Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in Adolescent Throwers
Overuse injuries in young throwing athletes are common with the shoulder and elbow frequently affected. This is due, in part, to the way that the physes (growth plates) in a young person ossify and fuse together. Knowledge of these injuries combined with early modification of activity and treatment can prevent functional disability and permanent deformity.
    Risk factors include:
  • Increase game pitch counts and pitches thrown in a season
  • Increased incidence with curveballs and sliders
  • Players enrolled in multiple leagues, all-star teams, etc. may be at increased risk for overuse injuries

    What are they?

A collection of disorders that frequently can be a stress fracture of the physis (growth plate) in the shoulder or elbow that can lead to permanent damage if not treated appropriately. Frequently they can be managed without surgery and without permanent damage if diagnosed and treated early by an orthopaedic surgeon along with an appropriate timeline for return to sport.
